Statement of Solidarity with Zain Haq and Call to Action

CCJ Statement of Solidarity

The Centre for Climate Justice stands in solidarity with Zain Haq, who is facing deportation from Canada for his climate activism. Freedom of expression is foundational to climate justice. Across the world, we are witnessing anti-democratic crackdowns on activists, communities, and scholars who are struggling against militarism, extraction, colonialism, and other obstacles to climate justice. We see the chilling effects of repression and censorship from global climate conferences to university campuses. Rights to expression are increasingly under threat for migrants, as the tightening of border regimes threatens our collective ability to organize for a more just world.

The repression and potential deportation of Zain Haq must be denounced as part of this global crackdown on expression and the right to mobility. Climate justice is unachievable without migrant justice and basic political freedoms.

Call to Action #1

From StopZainsDeportation.ca:

“Join us on Zoom on Thursday April 18th at 12pm PST / 9am EST.

We are hoping to have Zoom break out rooms to instruct Zain’s friends and allies to flood both their MP’s and Minister Marc Miller’s phones about the need for their immediate intervention to Stop Zain’s Deportation.”

Call to Action #2:

From StopZainsDeportation.ca:

“On March 11th, the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) instructed 23-year-old Simon Fraser University (SFU) student and climate justice activist Zain Haq to leave Canada by April 22nd. This means that Zain is facing deportation from Canada for peaceful protest and action in defense of mother earth. We must defend the democratic rights of Zain & all activists! The LAST and ONLY chance we have at stopping deportation is Ministerial intervention by Minister of Immigration Marc Miller!

Send a letter to your Member of Parliament, the Minister of Immigration and the Prime Minister to ask for a ‘stay’ on Zain’s removal order.”
