On November 25, the emerging Centre for Climate Justice and the student group Climate Justice UBC co-hosted a Climate Emergency Town Hall. The UBC Climate Hub and Sustainability Hub also lent support for the event.
The town hall was organized in response to compounding climate disasters in BC this year, including current catastrophic floods in the Fraser Valley, wildfires, heat domes, and the brutal militarized raids on land defenders in Wet’suwet’en territory. With British Columbia on the frontlines of both climate breakdown and new fossil fuel extraction, the CCJ called the town hall to discuss these questions:
What is the role of the academy in moving our society to the justice-based policies and actions that keep our communities safe? And what strategies will shift us into true emergency footing?
Speakers at the town hall included Kai Nagata of Dogwood, journalist Brandi Morin, Kanahus Manuel of Tiny House Warriors, The CCJ’s Professor of Climate Justice Naomi Klein, Anjali Appadurai of Sierra Club BC, and Yasmina Seifeddine of Climate Justice UBC. The panel’s distinguished guest wsa Chief Ninawá Huni Kui of the Federation of the Huni Kui. The CCJ’s Avi Lewis hosted the town hall and took audience questions.
